About me

I was born in Turin, in the North-West of Italy. Here, I studied philosophy and obtained my MA and PhD degrees.

During my PhD, I was a visiting student at University College Cork under the supervision of Joel Walmsley and at the University of Lisbon with David Yates. Given my interest in Chinese language and culture, I’ve spent some time in China, at Beijing Normal University (2016) and Wuhan University (2019—yes: not a great time to be there).

Since 2015, I’ve been an active member of the Labont – Center for Ontology at the University of Turin. I am the editor of the Labont Weekly Newsletter and a member of the editorial board of Rivista di Estetica. In 2021-2022, I spent a wonderful year in Aachen, as a junior fellow at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg: Cultures of Research (RWTH Aachen University). Since 2024, I have been an associate professor at Cusano University (Rome), and in the same year, I became a member of the scientific board of the German journal Yearbook for Philosophy of Complex Systems. Starting from september 2025, I will hold the Excellence Chair “Trandisciplinarity and Research on Complex Systems” at the Iméra Institute of Advanced Studies, (Aix Marseille Université).

My research focus is on emergence, novelty, complexity and causation. My PhD dissertation aimed at providing a comprehensive and pluralist account of emergence compatible with some forms of reductionism and able to accommodate several models of emergence already present in the philosophical and scientific literature. I wrote a book (in Italian) on these topics (Metafisica dell’emergenza) and some papers. I am now working on my second book on emergence (in English) and co-editing a Synthese Topical Collection on the same fascinating topic: New Philosophical Approaches to Emergence: Towards Pluralism.

Finally, on a personal note, I’m vegan, I have a lovely dog named Peggy, and my favourite places to spend my free time are the gym and… the meadows! I’m fond of nature, animals (especially BUGS!), and photography (here you can find my shots)!
